Why does abstract art sell for as much as figurative art?
Simon C asked the question:
This has always puzzled me. Why does abstract art sell for as much as, or more than, figurative art?
Whenever I go into an art gallery or art auction I’m always blown away by the price tag put on the abstract art there. Much of the work is very simple, so much so that someone just starting out with art could have created it.
As an illustrator I’ve had to spend literally thousands of hours practicing to get my skills where they are today. I find it disheartening to see abstract pieces selling for as much (or more) than pieces which obviously have years of effort and dedication behind them. I feel it cheapens the artist’s efforts to consider their work as equal.
Is that wrong? Why is abstract art not cheaper?

Where’s a good place to sell my art in Kansas City, MO?
zebraTie asked the question:
I produce photography work. Where is the best place to start selling my work. I want to sell it cheap and with no over head costs. I don’t want to sell online.
These are all one of a kinds prints. I think I need a market that can see past normal thinking. I had tried to sell my work in a gallery in St. Joe, but that was the worst market to start in, I had some connections. I think that KC has some open minded people who appreciate different types of art work.
Goodwill is not a place to sell my art- that’s a place to give it away!

I want to discover the ‘alternative’ & spiritual side of NY. dingy rock cafes, crazy art exhibits, anyone?
Tattooed Babydoll asked the question:
I haven’t been to NY for over 4 years - the last time I mostly only travelled around Chinatown. So, this time I want to see as much as possible, but not what the ‘usual tourist’ wants to see. I’m not all that fussed about museums, skyscrapers, statues etc… I’m hoping to discover weird little shops down alleys, kickass tattooists & their studios, grungy rock n’ roll hangouts, cyber shops, new-age cafes, spiritual gathering places, strange art galleries, diners devoted to Motorhead, cool little live music venues with dreadlocked bar staff… lol you get the idea? I don’t want to see what I could see over here, replicated in NY - for instance counting all the Starbucks I can find. I want to get right into the heart of the NY alternative culture. I’ve been told East Village is a great place to start, but other than that I’m clueless! My trip is going to cover Connecticut, Vermont & Massachusetts too, so likewise with those places. Any kind of response would be awesome. Cheers.

If you could turn people into statues would you use your strange power for good or evil? (dun dun dun)?
Not a hippie asked the question:
Suppose you had this power, would you use it for good or evil?
Would you go crazy and try to start and art gallery? Maybe make all the people you don’t like into tasteful pieces de’ art?
Describe how you would use your newfound abilities
(lets assume that the people you turn to statues are completely aware , i.e. not dead, during that time, you choose what their made out of and how their posed)
Most creative and detailed answer will get the 10 points. Describe the transformation if you want, whatever you think will get you the points.
Get creative and have fun!
(Note: people who came here to spam or hate will be added to the art gallery)

Should I sell my photographic art in limited editions, or not?
grebned asked the question:
I am an emerging photographic artist starting to sell my work through art shows, the web and possibly some galleries and am debating whether to sell it in limited editions. Let me explain my work; it starts as an original photograph, but after much digital rendering, the finished piece looks like an oil painting and is initally presented as a giclee print on a large canvas.
If I go with limited editions, I’m thinking of offering editions totalling 100 signed and numbered giclee prints. These editions would be comprised of prints of varying dimensions; ie: 8”x11”, 11”x15, 16”x22” and, of course, the large canvas; all within the same edition. Any opinions on this approach? I’ve seen it done elsewhere, so I’m thinking it might work.
On the other hand, should I even limit my editions? I’ve had advice that I should just sign the prints and not number them. That would certainly be a lot less work for me, but in trying to become collected as a serious artist, is it a viable approach
